Marjorie Louise Herweg Stakes was freed from the debilitating effects of Alzheimer's on Saturday, May 28, 2012. Born June 23, 1919 in Burlington, Iowa to Ouida Barbara Courtright Herweg and James Ewald Herweg, Marjorie graduated from Burlington High School and Drury College in Springfield, MO, with a degree in Home Economics. During her first year of teaching, Marjorie met and married Joseph Thomas Stakes; a union that lasted until his death in 1983. Living in Atlantic City, NJ, and Springfield, West Plains, Jefferson City and Glendale, MO, Marjorie's life centered around her family, home, church (Grace Episcopal Church, Kirkwood, MO), friends, and P.E.O. She was always the first to volunteer as room mother and Scout leader. Her home economics background was apparent in her sewing for herself and her daughters, seasonal decorations (there are many 50 and 60 year old "children" still hanging her handcrafted felt and sequin Christmas stockings and Advent calendars), garden flowers and entertaining. Extension courses in millinery, tailoring, cake decorating and calligraphy kept her calendar full as new interest groups were formed and her family and friends enjoyed the results of these new talents. In retirement, Marjorie and her husband indulged their interest in antiques, adding to their collections and attending numerous conventions. Marjorie is survived by her daughters: Ouida Steinkamp (Bill) and Dianne Stakes; grandchildren, Joseph Bradley (Brad) Steinkamp and children Kristen and Dylan and Christina Patterson and son Matthew; brother: Dr. John C. Herweg (Dottie), cousin: Janice Wachter and nieces: Marjorie Stelmach (Dan), Mary Jo Tillman (Ron) and Jan Marie Herweg. A family memorial service will be held in the chapel of Memorial United Methodist Church, Clinton, TN, with burial in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, MO.
