Obituary

Born in Corvallis, Oregon, on February 25th, 1957, Margaret Ann Cockrell (Dick) passed away on January 27th, 2025. She is preceded in death by her parents Doris Dick and Robert Dick and survived by her brother Robert Dick, sister, DeEtte Altvater, two children Marvyl Ann Garnier and Dale Cockrell, and her granddaughters Olivia Lilith Cockrell and Noelle Margaret Garnier.

Maggie lived most of her life like a rebel without a cause. Whether it was stealing motorcycles, beating up her sister's crummy boyfriends, or running off to get married (again)...you could definitely say she was a wild child. She chose the road less traveled and often the most bumpy one she could find, but all along the way she never met a stranger and lived life to the fullest. Later in life once she "settled down"...if you can call it that...she graduated at the top of her class at nursing school, while being a single mom and also worked at one of Dell's first computer call centers helping people with their first computers. She was incredibly tech savvy, wildly creative, and always the life of any party. She wasn't a very high maintenance type of gal. She never wore makeup, she went camping for her honeymoon, and her night of ultimate fun included playing Yahtzee on the custom game cards she created.

The thing that made her so special wasn't her intelligence, her biting dark sense of humor, her impeccable sarcasm, or her unbelievable cooking abilities (Although her chocolate chip cookies were named "marry me cookies" for how incredibly delicious they were)…but it was her capacity for loving others. The phrase "give the shirt off her back" doesn't even come close because Maggie would give everything she was wearing and then some.

Anyone she encountered her entire life that needed an extra hand, someone to believe in them, someone to take care of them, or even just a good meal she was there. She taught her children that everyone was facing a battle and that the ultimate gift in this world is kindness and compassion. Her house was often filled with those who needed an extra leg up in the world or just a safe place to land.

It was also filled with teenagers…lots and lots of teenagers. Maggie was THE mom. All of her children's friends spent every weekend hanging out at her house, eating lasagna and making life long memories. The kids that called her house their second home (and some that she even took in as her own called it their first) knew that she had created a space where they could be themselves, and have an adult they could confide in for encouragement, support, and advice. Maggie never judged anyone, and could always be trusted and so many of Marvyl and Dale's friends came to her first with their troubles and questions. She made every child feel like their existence mattered in this world, and even if it seemed like they had no one, they always had her.

While she was busy being everyone's mom, she was also a dedicated wife for over sixteen years. She moved across the country, making a home wherever was needed while making sacrifices of her own for her family to thrive.

To her own children, Maggie was everything. She was the ultimate cheerleader. There was nothing she believed her children couldn't do and made sure that every second they knew that they were loved and supported no matter how crazy their hopes and dreams were. She was the creator of extravagant holidays and magic from Moonlight lollipop gardens to the Christmases you only see in movies. Her parties were unforgettable and the memories she made with her children will be with them the rest of their lives. She raised her children to do what's right even when it's not easy, to work hard, and always give everything you can.

Maggie did not want an obituary, or a funeral. She never wanted anyone to make a fuss over her. But the truth is, it's hard not to make a fuss over someone so incredible leaving this Earth. The last years of her life changed her in many ways. She was fighting a battle that she couldn't overcome but now she is finally at peace. The one thing that remained unchanged over the years, that her demons could not rob her of, is the lasting impact she had on so many lives. No matter how the end arrived, we will always have cherished memories of Maggie to hold onto. Everyone she encountered knew who she really was in her heart and soul. Her generosity, free spirit, and love will live on through her children and those who had the joy and honor of crossing her path in this lifetime.

The family will celebrate her life together. If anyone wants to send flowers to the family they can be sent to 5519 Gallatin Lane, North Charleston, SC 29420   Holley Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton is in charge of all arrangements.  holleygamble.com
