With faith and love, we announce the passing of Lawrence Wilson Weston. He entered into the presence of the Lord on May 11, 2025, at the age of 92.
Lawrence (Larry) was born on November 18, 1932, to Lawrence and Erin Williams Weston. He grew up in Marianna, Florida. His scholastic abilities became evident at an early age, and he showed special interest in the sciences and mathematics. He was also a skilled gymnast. He attended Florida State University. While at FSU, he enjoyed competing on the gymnastics team, winning titles at the state competitions. He graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Physics from Florida State and was recognized for his academic excellence by receiving a fellowship from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. He graduated from Duke University with a PhD in Physics in 1960.
In 1958 he married Iris Simmons, who was a nurse employed with Watts Hospital in Durham, North Carolina. They relocated to Oak Ridge, Tennessee when he was offered a position as a research scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. His research was focused on subatomic particles, about which he published articles and gave presentations at national conferences on his findings. He worked at Oak Ridge National Laboratory as a nuclear physicist for 34 years.
He was an attentive and loving father to two children, Laura Weston Noe and Carl Lawrence Weston.
In 2002, Larry married Lenna Lovette while cruising throughout the Caribbean. Together, they spent a decade traveling the world. Among the many states and countries visited, their favorites included Hawaii, Alaska, Greece, Germany, Turkey and the Mediterranean.
Over the years, Larry enjoyed target shooting at Oak Ridge Sportsman's Association, flying model airplanes at KCRC and biking. His cycling hobby generated the nick-name "Papaw Cycle" from his grandchildren. He was also a member of First Christian Church in Oak Ridge, where he served as a deacon.
Larry was predeceased by his parents, Lawrence and Erin, and his wife Lenna. He will be lovingly remembered by his siblings Nell (Jack) Jenkins of Plant City, FL, Harold (Carol) Weston of Jenings, AL.; his first wife Iris Housley, his children Laura (Jerry) Noe of Manchester TN, Dr. Carl Weston of Orlando, Fl and Katie Lovette of Knoxville, TN; his grandchildren Kyle (Kyndal) Noe of Christiana, TN, Kimberly Noe (Logan) of Knoxville, TN, and Jared Lovette of Knoxville; and a great-grandchild Briggs Weston Noe of Christiana, TN.
Additionally, he will be greatly missed by his beloved dog, Charlie.
There will be a private Celebration of Life for Larry at the annual family reunion in Mexico
