Lavancha "Kaye" Sheldon, of the Marlow Community, left her earthly home on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, to join her heavenly Father—a homecoming she had prepared for throughout her 80 years.

Kaye's life was a beautiful testimony to unwavering devotion. As a faithful member of Poplar Creek Baptist Church, she didn't simply attend services—she lived her faith through generous service. Whether teaching children's Sunday School with patience and joy, serving alongside the WMU sisters, or singing in the choir, Kaye's hands were always busy doing the Lord's work. She dedicated herself to the Eastern Star, where she earned the honor of Worthy Matron and her favorite station was Electa. She worked hard to raise money for the Shriners Hospital.

Kaye carried a protective "big sister" spirit throughout her entire life—not just toward family, but toward anyone who needed defending or a gentle word of comfort. Perhaps, the “big sister” spirit began at birth. Her twin sister, Faye was very small and according to doctors, had Kaye been born first, Faye may not have survived. Kaye helped her sister from the very moment they were born by pushing her from the womb. Those who knew her treasured the special bond these identical twins shared, a connection that spoke to something deeper than words could capture. But beyond her protective nature lay a tender heart. Kaye wore her "hug collector" pin with pride, and everyone who crossed her path knew they were walking away with a memory of genuine warmth and affection

Never one to let age define her possibilities, Kaye made a brave decision in her 50s to pursue and earn a degree in electronics from TCAT in Harriman. That achievement spoke volumes about her character—determined, courageous, and forever growing. Kaye found delight in bowling—both here in Oak Ridge and with a league across the country in Washington State—where she achieved what every bowler dreams of: not just one perfect 300-point game, but two.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Patten Smith and Mae Smith, twin sister, Wanda “Faye” Currier and her brother, Bruce Smith.

Kaye will be greatly missed by her husband of 50 years, James Sheldon; son, Robert “Bobby” Sheldon and wife Tabitha; daughter, Denise Owens and husband Doug; brother, Glen Smith and wife Martha; grandchildren, Talesha (Willie), Trey, Broxden, and Emma; great-grandchildren, Lilly and Sean; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members that she loved dearly.

The family would like to express a special “thank you” to the nurses with Covenant Hospice, Hannah, Tasha, Rebecca, and Cindy for the love and compassion they have shown.

Receiving of Friends will be from 5:00-7:00 pm on Saturday, July 25, 2026 at Holley Gamble Funeral Home. Her funeral service will begin at 7:00 pm with Pastor Mark Acres officiating. Family and friends are invited to meet at Holley Gamble Funeral Home on Sunday, July 26, 2026. They will go in procession to Poplar Creek Baptist Church Cemetery for a 2:00 pm graveside service.
