It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of James Leroy Howard, who passed away on June 29, 2026, at Sacred Ground Hospice House in Knoxville, Tennessee, surrounded by his family.

Born on November 10, 1949, in Jasper, Tennessee, to Richard and Ruth Blevins Howard. Leroy was a devoted husband who shared 53 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Bessie Howard.

He was a proud graduate of Middle Tennessee State University, earning his bachelor’s degree and his Educational Specialist (Ed.S) degree in Education from the University of Tennessee. He dedicated 35 years to teaching, leaving a lasting impact on many students. He retired from Anderson County High School. He attended Memorial United Methodist Church in his free time, he enjoyed fishing, golf and UT sports. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his loving wife, Bessie Howard, his brother, Dale (Sandy) Howard, his nephew Jeff (Kacie) Howard, and niece Cheri (Mark) Moreland; as well as several other nieces and nephews, all of whom will cherish his memory.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Howard and Ruth Blevins Howard.

A memorial service will be held at Holley Gamble Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at 10:00 AM. Family and friends are invited to attend and celebrate his life.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Sacred Ground Hospice House in Knoxville, Tennessee, in appreciation of the compassionate care provided during his final days.
