Eleanor Jane Nelson passed away March 22, 2014.
Eleanor Jane Nelson was born Nov. 23, 1913 to John and Cora Downing in Aledo, Illinois. She married Axel Fridolf Nelson in Rock Island, Illinois and then moved to Waukegan, Ill. She graduated from nursing school and later earned a degree in Public Health from Loyola University. She served as a school nurse in the Waukegan School system until retirement. They moved to Macgregor, Minnesota, living in their lake home where she was active in the Lutheran church and did volunteer work. They moved to Aikin, MN and she continued serving others, like delivering Meals on Wheels, visiting shut- ins, etc. After her husband passed away, she moved to Norris, TN in 2000. She was named volunteer of the year and was honored several times by AARP and Anderson County. She was active in the Norris Religious Fellowship and often made meals for those in need, volunteered at the library, the elementary school, and visited and read to the nursing home patients. She loved to play bridge with the ladies in Norris, attended the Norris Woman's Club and the literary group, and hardly ever missed having lunch with the Loose Ladies.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Axel, her twin sister, Mary Ingram, a grandson, Brian Cohn, and brother, Robert Downing. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Ellie and Arnie Cohn, granddaughters, Cindy (Mark) Donovan, Tucson, AZ, Cathy(Brian)Kramer, Beach Park, IL, great grandchildren, Jason(Shelly) Cohn, Tara Donovan, Derek Donovan, Allison Petersen, twin great great grandsons, Max and Jackson Cohn, a niece and two nephews. A celebration of her life will be held April 9th, 7 PM at the Norris Religious Fellowship church with the Rev. Dr. Keith Haverkamp officiating.
