Douglas B. Janney, Jr., 75, of Knoxville and formerly of Oak Ridge, passed away on Saturday, December 4, 2021, surrounded by family members.

Mr. Janney was born in Oak Ridge in 1946 and was a 1964 graduate of Oak Ridge High School.  He received his bachelor's degree in architecture with honors from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1969, graduating first in his class in the inaugural class of UT's College of Architecture.

He worked as an architect in Oak Ridge and Knoxville for 43 years until his retirement in 2012.  He was co-owner of Ross Janney Hester Fowler, PC (1972-1983), and worked at Lockwood Greene and CH2M Hill (1983-2012), primarily as Division Manager.  He designed numerous commercial and government buildings and facilities locally and around the country.

He was a Board member and longtime Chairman of both the Oak Ridge Industrial Development Board (1992-2010) and the Oak Ridge Board of Zoning Appeals (1987-2003).  He served on the Boards of Directors of the American Heart Association, Anderson County Division (1992-2002), and the Oak Ridge Art Center (1988-1995), among other organizations.

He had numerous interests and hobbies.  A master craftsman and woodworker, he constructed additions to his home, built furniture, and could repair nearly anything in and around the home.  A lifelong photographer, he took, developed, and shared thousands of photographs and videos.  He was passionate about genealogy, researching and tracing family histories back hundreds of years and becoming a member of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants.  He was a talented visual artist and played guitar, harmonica, and chess.  He played tennis, was an avid jogger and biker, and remained physically active throughout his retirement.  He enjoyed sporting events and was a longtime UT football season ticket holder.  He was an automotive enthusiast and enjoyed repairing and maintaining automobiles.

He will be remembered as a devoted and compassionate family man and friend.  He had an extraordinary ability to encourage and uplift others.  He was humble and generous with his time and talents.

Mr. Janney was preceded in death by his mother and father, Mary T. Janney and Douglas B. Janney, Sr., formerly of Oak Ridge.  He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Betty; his children, Douglas Janney III (Jennifer) of Brentwood, Tennessee, John Janney of San Antonio, Texas, and Amanda Johnston (Thomas) of Knoxville; brothers, Peter Janney (Betsy) of Knoxville and MAJ (RET.) David Janney (Barbara) of San Francisco, California; sisters Lisa Mott (Fabian) of Clinton, Tennessee, and Angela Janney of Venice, Florida; six grandchildren, Brock Johnston, Zach Johnston, Alexa Janney, Nadia Janney, Harper Janney, and Clara Janney; in-laws William Bradham (Leatha) and Nancy Roberts (Daniel); and many nieces and nephews, including Linda Dickson, Carol Bradham-Hancz, Margaret McKamey, Evan Janney, Michael Mott, and Matthew Mott.

The family will receive friends on Friday, December 10, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Holley Gamble Funeral Home, 621 S. Charles Seivers Blvd., in Clinton.  A funeral service will follow at 7:00 p.m.  Interment will be on Saturday, December 11, at 11:00 a.m. at Anderson Memorial Gardens, 640 Oliver Springs Highway, in Clinton.
