Obituary


Charles Lawrence (Larry) Viar, age 86 of Clinton departed this life Saturday, August 6, 2011 quietly at home after a lengthy illness with his wife of 65 years by his side. Lawrence was a very early employee on the Manhattan Project. He began his career at Y-12 on July 5, 1943 with badge number 9800. He worked with the calutron, the first cyclotron and was greatly involved with the building of ORIC, the 86" cyclotron and its operation. He retired in 1984 as possibly the youngest retiree of ORNL with full retirement points. In retirement Lawrence continued to be an avid golfer and gardener and greatly enjoyed living life free of rotating shifts.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Bennie Ruth Viar and son, Kenneth Viar.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret; son Lawrence Simmerman Viar and wife Rebecca of Robbinsville, N.C.; granddaughters, Donna Jean Clevenger and husband Timothy of Powell and Margaret Loraine Viar of Quincy, MA; grandsons, Adam Viar and Devin Viar of Robbinsville, N.C.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, August 8th at 3:00PM at Oak Ridge Memorial Gardens. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton is in charge of the arrangements
