Billy James Howell

Bill Howell passed into God's loving embrace on October 16, 2010. Bill was deeply loved by his many friends and family. Born on Sept. 6, 1926, he was raised in Waynesville, N.C. by Nora James Howell and Millard Howell, along with 6 brothers and sisters.
Bill trained to be an electrician, studying at Cohen Electric in Chicago before coming to work for Union Carbide in Oak Ridge in 1949. Bill worked at ORGDP, ORNL and as an independent electrical contractor. He met his cherished wife, Dorothy Wallace Howell, through co-workers and they were married July 30, 1969. Bill and Dot enjoyed 41 years together, sharing joyous times, laughter and deep caring for one another. Bill and Dot cared for his beloved in-laws, Homer and Bessie Wallace, at their shared home on Carden Road.
Bill took great pleasure in raising a bounteous garden, sharing the harvest with friends and family. He was closest to God in his garden, riding his tractor in the sunshine, enjoying the flowers and the breezes, working the good earth. His friends and family treasured his playful humor, admired his strong work ethic and his sparkling, blue eyes. These will not be forgotten. Bill will be deeply missed.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Nora James Howell and Millard Howell, his brothers Joe and Richard, his sisters Robena Snyder and Harriet Withers, and his in-laws, Homer & Bessie Wallace. He leaves behind his loving wife Dot, his sisters Betty Reed, Dorcas (Charles) Love, sister in-law, Clara McClure (Stan Harris), brother-in-law William Wallace (Julie), many nieces and nephews including Jack (Jan)Snyder, Chuck (Raquel)Love and April Love-Fordham (Steve Fordham),Wendy McClure, Laura McClure (Michael Kaufman), Nora Wallace (Gerry Lushington) and Lisa Wallace.
Bill bravely endured several years of health challenges. Our family is grateful to UT Hospice Services, Professional Case Management, physicians, including Dr. Jose Malagon and Dr. Stephen Miller, and the nurses who provided comfort and care to Bill in his final months. We're thankful for compassionate friends who supported Bill and Dot through this difficult time.
The family will receive friends at Clinton First Baptist Church on Wednesday, Oct. 20 from 3 to 5pm, followed by funeral services at 5pm. Interment and Masonic Services will be on Thursday, October 21, at 11am at Sunset Cemetery in Clinton. Remembrances may be made to Clinton First Baptist Church.
