Obituary

Betty Jean Darnell, 93, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, January 6, 2026. Born in Kentucky, she relocated with her family to Tennessee in 1966, where she would build a life centered on love and service.

A devoted wife and mother, Betty Jean married the love of her life, Roy, on April 6, 1952, sharing over 50 wonderful years together. She selflessly transitioned from her career as a Beautician to focus on raising her family. Her faith remained steadfast as a longtime member of First Baptist Church, where she actively served through the Wednesday Club and Timely Topics. Known for her kind heart and outgoing spirit, Betty Jean never met a stranger. She found joy in reading, the beauty of mountains, cooking for loved ones, and watching birds at her feeders. Her talents included seamstress work, and those who knew her best appreciated her occasional "feisty" nature that added spark to her character. Above all, Betty Jean treasured her roles as wife, mother, grandmother, and cherished "Meemaw" to her great-grandson. Her ability to see good in everyone and her beautiful spirit, both inside and out, touched all who knew her.

She is preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Roy Darnell; parents, Milton and Thelma Smith; granddaughter, Meghan Kovach; sister, Gladys Duvall and brother, MC Smith.

Betty will be greatly missed by her children, Mike Darnell and Jana Darnell; sister, Linda Sue Buckles (Steve); grandson, Sean Darnell; great-grandson, Henry Kovach and his father, Matt Kovach; special friends, Katrina, Ella, Stacey, and Shannon; many other extended family members and special friends who she loved dearly.

She will be laid to rest by her beloved husband at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, January 13, 2026 at Grandview Memorial Garden. Dr. Danny Chisolm and Rev. Terry Baker will be officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Christian Service Center of First Baptist Church, Clinton. Mailing address is P.O. Box 268, Clinton, TN 37717.
