Alexander M. Stuart, age 93 of Clinton, died on Wednesday, April 22, 2020.  He was the younger of two children born to Dr. and Mrs. Alexander Stuart of Jonesborough.  Proceeded in death by his parents, by wife Marylee Cloyd Stuart; by sister, Mary Beil; and niece, Mary S. Beil.  Survived by sons, David Stuart (wife Sarah) and Stephen Stuart of Clinton; granddaughters, Adriana and Rebecca; also survived by special nieces, Phillis Crain of Jonesborough (companion Kenneth Rawls), Betty Jo Dempsey (Darrell) and Billie Jean Osborne (Ray).  Alex was an Engle Scout, a graduate of Jonesborough High School, veteran of WWII, graduate of East Tennessee State University and Vanderbilt University.  He taught science and math at Sulphur Springs High, and was ordained to the Presbyterian Ministry in 1953.  He briefly served churches in Charleston, WV, Plantation, FL and Knoxville.  He was a long-time paster of First Presbyterian Church of Oak Ridge where he was active in the struggle for equal public services and rights for all regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation or national origin.  He served 20 years at psychiatric chaplain in Lakeshore Mental Health Institute.  He was a Clinical Member of the American Association for marriage and Family Therapy, and licensed by Tennessee as Professional Counselor, and as a Martial and Family Therapist.  Throughout his life he was deeply concerned with what he saw as three basic evils of our society: poverty, prejudice, and wars of choice.  Alex lived a long and happy life surrounded by loving family, wonderful friends and good neighbors.  The family is honoring his request that no public service be held.  Private burial will be in the family plot at Maple Lawn Cemetery in Jonesborough with his childhood sweetheart and wife of 68 years.
